View Full Version : Cardio Burns Muscle ?!

Ok, being a competitive bodybuilder you get to know other bodybuilder and what they do contest prep.

I've heard alot of people say "Don't do too much Cardio .... you'll burn muscle". I've also heared others argue that you gotta do a absoloute Ton of cardio before you start burning muscle. (Shawn Ray said this, for one).

Does anyone have the real answer ????

There are so many ways to go here. I think it's trial and error of how your body will respond. I personally think cardio helps. If you are afraid of burning muscle, don't do cardio on an empty stomach. I think that doing wind sprints with some carbs in your muscles is good because the sprints will burn off the carbs AND your metabolism is hyped up for the rest of the day.

yates i think both are true to an extent. Higher intensity cardio ( in which your aerobic capacity is exceeded-probably anything more than walking for big guys...lol) will burn carbs first with some fat being used as well. If your say using a bulking diet with plenty of carbs you will need to deplete you glycogen stores (more in the liver) thus you'll need to burn 400-500 g of glycogen. SO shawn ray is right.

Now if your cutting and all nutrients are resticted (below maintainence levels), your glycogen levels will be much lower. Your body will need glucose to fuel the cardio and thus aminos from muscle and other lean tissue will be the source- so the others are right.

Now lower intensity cardio will be closer to aerobic capacity but burns less cals/hr (but more % from fat-thus more muscle preserving). This means you need to do much more that above. Unfortunately, as i am learning in life everything seems to be an issue of give-and-takes...

it probably depends on how much DNP and thryoid hormones some of these competitors have as well. as the more natural the athlete is, the more cariod they will have to get lean?
while some big roid users who are taking lots of anadrol can keep there anabolism up even when eating small amounts food so they do not need to do cardio. but if they did they still would keep lots of muscle as well.

Also depends on much fat they have to loose. eg if big bulker they may have to do cardio as lots of fat to loose then some who stays leaner in the off season.


aslo the intensity and duration of the cardio will also matter as well. there is a big difference between a short low intense session than a long intense session.

The amount of time they spend doing weights as well. If you have a HIT trainer they are not going to burn to many kcals in the gym compared to to other person doing 2 hours a session. the perosn doing 2 hours per session is less likely to need to do cardio as going to be using lots of energy, plus edging to a very catabolic state if they do nay more exercise.

I just thought it bore mentioning that amino acids are utilized for energy at any activity level, (besides the obvious BCAAs), and any sort of exercise increases the rate at which they are used. Eat all you want, but unless you have an IV drip of the perfect ratios of glucose, free form aminos, and fatty acids, you will end up cannibalizing muscle during cardio.

If I took as many tissue building drugs as Shawn Ray, I could do cardio all day long as well, and train with 30 sets per bodypart, and so on, and so on....

I think that some cardiovascular exercise is good for just about any trainee because it is healthy for your heart. I, unfortunately, do very little of it. This, by the way, was no hinderence to my losing over 20 lbs of bodyfat.

As for leg training and cardio, if you do a lot of cardio (and don't take a boatload of drugs), your leg strength and size will suffer. Period. End of story, etc..... The two types of training elicit different reactions from the body, opposite adaptations by the muscle cells.

I don't have the answer, I just wanted to comment that I think it is funny that the guy who can get into the heaviest contest shape of anyone on the board asks questions like this. :p



Like you said though Yates, some peeps who get extrememly ripped do it with a ton of cardio sessions a week. Some do it with little to none. I think if I was a big guy lookin to preserve my muscle while dieting I would want to do the least amount of cardio necessary to help my cause. Finding that amount I am sure is highly individual.


Feel free to ask me for tips on bulking lil fella. ;)

I am starting training again tomorrow after a long lay off and am about 240 pounds with about 27% bodyfat.I am going to use heaps of cardio with a higher level of caloric intake to reduce my bodyfat as well as weight train.As YATES said it is a matter of trial and error and i am just about to find out.

I also believe if aperson has a high level of bodyfat then they should do more cardio but if the person is lean then diet manipulation would be most advisable but then again it all comes down to trial and error.

I think it's funnier that the guy with the smallest muscles (Cack) would tell Yates not to do cardio cuz it burns too much muscle. LOL

I notice that I look and feel better when I do cardio, and if it means 5 lbs of muscle, so be it. I'm not trying to win the olymipa.

I think it's also worth lookin at the positive effects on the metobolism with Cardio.
